Latinas in STEAM: Ellen Ochoa, and Why the Ability to Explain Your Work Is Not a Soft Skill

In 1993, Ellen Ochoa flew aboard the space shuttle Discovery and became the first Hispanic woman to go to space. Two decades later she was named director of NASA’s Johnson Space Center, one of the most senior operational roles in American spaceflight. Before any of that she was an engineer with patents in optical systems, and she has said in interviews that she did not know a career like hers was available to her when she was a student.

That last detail is the one worth holding onto. The barrier was not capability. It was that nobody had shown her the job existed.

Ochoa is not an isolated case. Adriana Ocampo, born in Colombia and raised in Argentina, joined NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory young and went on to lead planetary science programmes; she is associated with the research that identified the Chicxulub crater in the Yucatán as the impact site linked to the extinction of the dinosaurs. France Córdova, an astrophysicist, served as director of the National Science Foundation. These are careers at the top of demanding fields, and most students have never been told a single one of these names.

The A in STEAM is not decoration

STEAM added an A to STEM, and a lot of people still read that letter as the elective that softens the serious subjects. That reading gets it precisely backwards, and the reason is visible in how scientific work actually survives.

A grant application is a story with a budget attached. So is a pitch to a hospital board, a conference talk, a product demonstration, a paper’s abstract, and the two minutes you get with somebody who could fund your laboratory. Research that cannot be explained does not stop being true, but it very often stops being funded, and work that is not funded does not continue.

This is not a complaint about fairness. It is what happens when work has to travel between people in order to matter. Researchers who can hold a room get invited back to rooms. Engineers who can explain a system to a non-engineer end up leading teams, because leading a team is largely explanation.

There are concrete things a student can practise long before any of this is at stake. Explain your project in three lengths — thirty seconds, three minutes, thirty minutes — because most people only ever prepare the long one and are then asked for the short one. Lead with the problem rather than the method, since nobody can absorb how you did it before they know why it mattered. Drop the jargon that is load-bearing for you and meaningless to your listener, not to simplify the work but to transmit it. And record yourself, which is uncomfortable and effective, because the gap between how you think you sound and how you sound is exactly where the improvement is.

Why we hand students cameras

People are sometimes surprised that our conferences put cameras in the hands of students headed for science and technology careers, often alongside partners whose work is squarely technical, including STEAM programmes supported by industry.

The aim is not to convert anyone into a filmmaker. It is that framing a shot forces you to decide what matters inside the frame, and cutting a sequence forces you to decide what matters in the story. Those are the same decisions you make building a slide deck, structuring a paper, or designing an interface. Editing is applied prioritisation, and it is learned fastest by doing it.

There is a second reason these worlds belong together. A student who loves biology and also loves film has usually been told, somewhere along the line, to choose. She does not have to. Science communication, medical animation, documentary production, museum media, educational technology and data visualisation are real fields with real salaries, held by people who declined the choice.

Our own work has lived in that overlap for three decades, producing educational media in English and Spanish on subjects from public health to human rights. The technical content was never the difficult part. Getting people to care about it was.

Teach a young woman to run the experiment and to tell the room why it matters, and you have not given her a hobby beside a career. You have given her two ways into the same building — and, like Ellen Ochoa, the knowledge that the building is open.
